ruddy earthquakes
Another quake last night, smaller than the previous one. USGS says a 4.0. Why do these damned things have to keep hitting right when I'm dropping off to sleep?

I have never experienced an earthquake in my life. What does it feel like. It must be scary and cool at the same time. We dont get them inirealnd but england gets one every now and again. I wonder why they get them and we dont.

If you've ever been in the room with a washing machine that got unbalanced during its spin cycle, you know how its shaking can transmit into the floor and make it vibrate. Now, imagine the washing machine is 10 stories tall and right next to your house. That's a small earthquake.

The biggest I was in was the Loma Prieta quake back in 1989. I was living in San Francisco at the time. That felt like a fist a half mile wide slammed into the city as hard as it could, dug its fingers into the soil, and start trying to shake the town up and down. The major shaking only lasted about 20 seconds, but that seemed like a very long time indeed. My thought process at the time was something along the lines of:

"whoa. This is a big quake. Whoa! This is a *big* quake.

oh shit. This is *The* Big Qua..."

and that's when it stopped.
